Project Overview

CodeQuickie is a website fixes and care plan service I designed, built, and run myself. It takes on the jobs that don't need a new website: a hacked site, a slow one, business email landing in spam, or a contact form that has stopped sending. Each fix is quoted before any work starts, and monthly care plans keep a site updated, backed up, and monitored afterwards. Agencies can use the care plans under their own name.

The Challenge

People with a broken website rarely know what's wrong with it, and they're wary of anyone who claims to know straight away. The site had to earn their trust before they got in touch.

The answer was to let visitors test their own site first. Three free tools run the checks and explain the results in plain English, so someone can see the problem for themselves before asking for a quote. Because anyone can type any address into them, the tools also had to be safe to point at whatever a stranger enters.

My Role

I did all of it: the plan, the design, the build, and the articles. It's a Laravel application with server-rendered Blade templates and no JavaScript framework, so every page works before any script loads. The styles are SCSS built with Vite, and the icons are drawn as inline SVG.

The email checker reads a domain's MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records over DNS-over-HTTPS and counts SPF lookups against the limit of ten. The speed check runs Google's PageSpeed Insights API and turns the results into a short list of problems in plain English. The WordPress health check looks at a site from the outside: its WordPress version against the latest release, files that shouldn't be public, security headers, and an out-of-date PHP version. Every request to a visitor's site goes through a guard that only allows public addresses, pins the connection, and re-checks each redirect, so the tools can't be turned against a private network.

Behind the public site is an admin I built for writing and scheduling articles in Markdown, handling enquiries, and seeing which sites have been checked. Articles carry structured data, and new ones are submitted to search engines through IndexNow when they publish.

Key Features

  • Email deliverability checker for MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records
  • Speed check built on Google's PageSpeed Insights API, with Core Web Vitals from Chrome's visitor data when Google has it
  • Outside-only WordPress health check covering versions, exposed files, and security headers
  • Guarded fetching, so an address a visitor enters can't reach a private network
  • Per-visitor rate limits and cached results on every tool
  • Articles system with drafts, scheduling, FAQs, and a table of contents
  • Article, FAQ, and breadcrumb structured data, an XML sitemap, and IndexNow
  • Custom admin for articles, enquiries, and tool checks
  • Contact form with spam protection and a confirmation email sent through Postmark
  • Server-rendered pages that work without JavaScript and respect reduced motion
  • Automated tests covering the tools and the article rules
